Let’s be real—everything around us is changing, and it’s changing fast. But here’s the good news: there’s one thing that will always keep you ahead, no matter what’s happening around you—your mindset.

Then came my first performance review. My manager told me, “You’re great at the tasks, but you struggle to adjust when things don’t go according to plan.” Ouch. At first, it felt like a gut punch. But deep down, I knew they were right. I was great when things were predictable, but the moment something changed, I would freeze or get frustrated.

That feedback stuck with me. I realized that being good at my job wasn’t enough—I had to get better at handling my job when things didn’t go my way. So, I started paying attention to how others around me responded to change. I asked for advice, stayed curious, and slowly but surely, I became the person my team relied on when things didn’t go as planned. Looking back, that mindset shift was a game-changer for my career.

The truth is, adaptability isn’t just a “nice-to-have” skill anymore—it’s the key to staying relevant. Whether it’s a new software rollout, an unexpected shift in leadership, or a sudden change in responsibilities, how you think about those moments will determine whether you sink or swim.

So, how do you make that shift? It starts with small changes. First, stop resisting feedback and start using it. Instead of taking constructive criticism personally, see it as a roadmap for improvement. Next, lean into discomfort—take on tasks that stretch you, even if they make you nervous. And finally, start asking yourself better questions when challenges arise. Instead of thinking, Why is this happening to me? ask, What can I learn from this?
